The True Story of Thyroid Disease.

And why it is usually missed.

Hypothyroidism is often undiagnosed and commonly undertreated.

Conservative estimates are that 200+ million people worldwide suffer from thyroid disease.  The vast majority are women.  The incident in women is 10x more common than in men.  The incidence is higher in more developed countries.

The thyroid affects all other body systems.  It is therefore a key driver for many other disease processes and dysfunctions in the body.  Sluggish thyroid……sluggish everything!

It is estimated that 50-95% of chronic hypothyroid is autoimmune in origin.  Nearly all hyperthyroidism is autoimmune in nature.

Why is this critical diagnosis missed?  First off, symptoms are often not reported, or dismissed as the natural process of aging.

Secondly, hypothyroid is usually diagnosed with a single blood test: TSH.  It may be “verified” with total T4.  The standard of care is a prescription for synthetic T4 (Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid).  There is no nutritional testing/guidance, no root cause assessment, and no dietary recommendations.  Often, symptoms and suffering persist.

“While prescription thyroid hormones might bring blood levels into a normal range, they don’t address what caused the thyroid to falter in the first place.  It is far wiser to ask what the faltering thyroid says about the entire body and proceed from there.”  Dr Datis Kharrazian.

This requires a FULL thyroid panel that actually shows how much active thyroid hormone your body has, whether or not you have thyroid antibodies, and if so, how much.  This also requires guidance from someone knowledgeable in root cause assessment, who has expertise in thyroid supporting nutrition, and who is experienced in providing lifestyle recommendations that boost thyroid health.

These are common signs and symptoms that your thyroid might not be working correctly:

Since your thyroid is such a key player in your overall health wouldn’t it be important to make sure you don’t have an undiagnosed or undertreated thyroid disease?
